Harbour Island March 2007

Ry and I just got back from the Bahamas- we chose to visit Harbour Island, a small island off of Eleuthra. What an absolute gem Harbour Island was. Famous for it's Pink Sand beaches, we decided to go see it for ourselves and indeed, the sand was powder pink and absolutely pristine. The beaches were the prettiest we have ever seen- clear blue ocean water, uncrowded beaches, and sunshine. We found our little slice of heaven here.

We flew into Fort Lauderdale and from there took a puddle-jumper one hour south to the island of Eleuthra. Once we landed, we took a boat ride to Harbor Island... it was such an exotic way to get to a destination! Once we made it to Harbor Island, we walked to our hotel... The Rockhouse. We were immediately blown away by the property... a small property owned by two gay men with amazing taste! We checked into our immaculate room and our vacation officially began!

We quickly changed into our beach clothes and set out to look for a place for lunch... we explored the adorable property and asked Wallace where to eat... he suggested the island favortite, Sip Sip so off we went!

We had an authentic Bahamian lunch at Sip Sip and a couple fancy drinks to kick-off our vacation... it was the perfect little spot that overlooked the beach that we were about to lounge at!

We set up shop right in the middle of the amazing pink sanded beach and spent the day relaxing, reading and swimming in the crystal clear water... pure bliss! In the middle of our relaxing days at the beach, these horses would stroll along, hoping that a tourist would be taken away enough to want to hitch a ride! Thankfully they only strolled by once and of course, no one chose to ride! Perfect photo opportunity though!

After spending the day on the beach, we explored Harbor Island a bit... such a cute little Bahamian town and the people were all so sweet. I loved all the colorful homes and architecture... it made the island so cheerful.

After walking around the island, we went back to The Rockhouse to relax and get ready for dinner... we decided to eat at The Rockhouse the first night since it was so highly recommended... we got dressed up and to our surprise, our very own private cabana was set up for us, pool-side. It was so romatic and beautiful!
> Dinner was unbelievable... we started off with a golden beet salad with grapefruit, pine nuts, creamy feta, and a citrus emulsion. We then had amazing local fish dishes and a passion fruit dessert... all made from local ingredients so the flavors were outstanding. We had never dined in our own private cabana so it was truly an unforgettable night!

After a good nights' rest and then a breakfast by the pool, we took an organized snorkel boat trip. We trekked out to the best snorkel point and I snorkeled with Ry for a bit until I saw a sting rey!! I freaked out and swam as fast as I could back to the boat. My snorkeling adventure was over and I gladly watched everyone else enjoy the sea life... praying that Ry wouldn't get stung! Regardless, we had a great time out on the water and had a delicious BBQ lunch on the boat.

After our boat trip, we went back to the beach to soak up some more sun and then went back to The Rockhouse for some cocktails by the pool. It was so fun to relax at The Rockhouse.. it truly felt like home! For our second dinner we decided to try Valentine's... it was a restaurant right on the harbor and we got a beautiful window seat on their open terrace. We enjoyed another delicious dinner with all local ingredients.

After dinner we walked down to the harbor and admired all the glamorous yachts... one was more stunning than the next! While on our transfer boat from the main island to Harbor Island, we met this really cute older couple who docked their yacht at the harbor and they invited us for drinks... we remembered the name of their yacht and expected not to find it but of course.. we did! We felt awkward at first knocking at their yacht door but then we thought.. what the hell! It could be an adventure! And an adventure it was... they were lovely and invited us right in for cocktails and another couple was there as well. We spent the evening talking away and actually had a great time!

Afterwards, they offered for all of us to hop on their golf cart and go down to the beach for a late night walk... a two-mile walk later, we were exhausted but it was definitely fun getting to know some nice people!

The next morning it was our last day on the island... we had another breakfast out by the pool and made one more quick stop to the beach and then it was time to pack up and head back home.

We took our boat transfer back to Eleuthra and the puddle jumper took us back to Fort Lauderdale so that we could make our connection back home.

What an amazing Memorial Day weekend adventure.. although it was a short trip, we made the very most of it and were so happy to have explored such a special gem of an island. The Rockhouse was an A+, the food was delicious and the people were all so hospitable.. a place we will definitely be coming back to in the future!
